- Perfect Christmas
まるで映画音楽を想わせるストリングスで始まるポップなミディアム8ビート
は、メロディーがわかりやすく、まるでポップスのお手本のようなフレッシュさを持っている。
ただポップでチャーミングなだけの曲のように聞こえるがだ
が、よく聞くとパーカッションがバックで、3連のノリでリズムを刻むというかなり渋いことをやっている。
コーラスが歌の厚みをきちんと保っているところなどは、日本の同じような年代の歌手のアルバムでは聴くことができない。
若者らしい素直なテイストを醸し出している
のは、サビがメロディーに負けていない、いわゆる「残る」メロディーラインを持っているからだろう。
だがこうしたメロディーラインが繰り返されると、局の変化がなくなるように聴こえるのだが、メロディーのバッキングのリズムを一瞬止めるなどというかなり凝ったことをしているが、一度しかやらないというさりげなさがカッコいい。
バッキングでもテーマのメロディーが繰り返されるが、そのリフがとてもシンプルで、歌を邪魔していないのは、このアルバムで力のあるアレンジャーが参加しているいるという証だ。
アメリカンポップスは健在だなあと思わせてくれる。

Fourplay
- Snow Bound
職人ドナルド・フェイゲンの名曲を、インスツルメントの職人たちが、素晴らしいサウンドに料理している。
イントロはまさに、ドナルド・フェイゲン独特のサウンドとフレーズで始まり、途中の管楽器の使い方もドナルドフェイゲン節だが、これを妙に変えたりせず、上手に生かしたアレンジがまた
お見事。
ラリーのギターもいい味を出している。
リー・リトナーもよかったけれど、ラリーのブルーノートの混ぜ方が絶妙。
それも、ディレイをかけた、少し歪ませたノートでね。
生ピアノではなく、わざわざと、いかにもエレピらしい音色で絡みつき、彼ならではのサウンドとフレーズを聞かせているのはボブ・ジェームス。
ハービーのドラムのスネアの音とタイミングが、実にいい。
ノリはもちろんのこと「タメる間合い」も絶妙。
スネアにかけてあるディレイが音に空間を作るなどの、凝った仕掛けが宝石のように散りばめられている。
バックのホーンセクションのカウンターフレーズも粋だ。
このホーンのリフがあるために、ドナルドフェイゲンサウンドを常に意識させられるのだろう。
彼ら4人は楽器でしか表現できない、そして歌では表現できない独自の世界を創り上げた。
音自体がとてもシンプルなのは、サウンドのない「間」をうまく生かしているからだろう。
彼らは「間」を聴かせることのできる、数少ない楽器弾きなのだと思う。
03 Amy Grant - Have Yourself a Merry
Christmas
エイミー・グラントは、その素朴で飾らない表現が魅力だ。
彼女はカントリー畑出身だが、この曲を聴いている限り、そうした匂いは全く感じない。
声の素朴な出し方と質感は、そうした「出身」によるところなのだろう。
Amy の歌はとても丁寧な感じがする。
だから歌そのものに、そうした種類の持つある種の説得力を与えている。
さらに彼女の歌はとても上品だ。
こうした上品さは、残念ながら日本の歌手にはない部分だが、実はこうしたことを感じさせるというのは、よく考えると凄いことなのだけどね。
それでいて、さらっとした風合いで歌うのだけれど、長いキャリアと実力に裏打ちされているため、ダシがまたよく効いている。
このあたりが、カントリー畑のファンだけではなく、誰からも好かれる理由なのだろう。
よく聴くと、この曲は実はドラムやベースなしの演奏なのだが、そうしたことは、彼女の歌声を聞いていると全く気がつかなかった。
アタマから響くオーケストラのサウンドがまた甘美で、ラストは、アメリカの田舎の郊外の牧場に広がる、澄み切った星空を想像しながら、夢を見させてくれる。
そして寒さで瞬く星空のように、余韻を残しながらで消えて行く・・

デュエットで絡むのは、声ですぐにわかるボビー・コードウェル。
控え目な管のバッキングも、パーカッションも、上質なスパイスのように効いている。
間奏はハモンドだが、抑え目のフレーズで、しかも要所でレズリーを回すという、なかなか渋いこともやってくれる。
ミディアムテンポだが、バックのギターをよく聴くと、歌のフレーズにあわせた3連のバッキングなどという、かなりの職人芸を聴くことができる。

のハモリで、ボビー・コードウェルのメロディーラインが降りてゆくのが、たまらなくお洒落だ。

最後の方で音楽をバックに、二人が話すのだが・・この続きがまたいい。
クリスマスのアルバムを一枚だけというのなら、迷わずこれをお勧め。

05 Baby Face - Rudolph The Nosed Reindeer
歌手だけではなく、プロデューサーとしてもかなりの力量を持つベビーフェイス。
この曲は日本ではたしか「赤鼻のトナカイ」とかいう邦題になるが、当然コード進行などは、かなり渋いことをやっている。
下手すると、ダサダサの曲になり兼ねないのだが・・
まずイントロだけを聴く限り、誰も「赤鼻のトナカイ」とは思わないだろうというピアノとギターの絡みから始まるが、メロディーへ移る際のきっかけの、ドラムのオカズでまず泣かせてくれる。
途中でかなり進行を変えてしまっているが、こういう思い切ったことをやって、ダンサブルな雰囲気を醸し出そうという意表をついたアイデアに脱帽だ。
アレンジを勉強する人にはとてもいい教材になるだろう。
ドラムのスネアのタイトさとコーラスのやわらかさの対比というかバランスがとてもお洒落だ。
途中のブレイクのエレピのサウンドもナイス。
ドラムもリムショットを使い分けたりと、こういうアレンジのセンスはいい意味での「黒人らしくない」ベビーフェイスのよさだろう。
バッキングにはハモンドのサウンドを使っている。
ベースのドドドというランニングのリズムの
ベビーフェイスのフレーズの「崩し方」を聞くと、只者ではないことがわかるはず。
だんだん盛り上がる「おかず」の入れ方や最後のサックスの絡みも、聞き所だ。

06 Larry Carlton - The Christmas Song
いわゆるエレキ・ギターの演奏。
この前の厚いサウンドのベビーフェイスを聴いたあとで、こういう薄い音の密度の演奏を聴くとホッとするのだが、こうしたサウンドがギター演奏の良さだろうね。
Four
Play への参加で最近ますますよく、そのサウンドを耳にするラリー・カールトン。
超有名な曲だが、ラリーは奇をてらわず、メロディーラインをとても丁寧に演奏している。
もちろん、端々にはラリー節が散りばめられている。
バックも、音の空間を十分に開けている。
ギターだけの演奏なのでちょっと地味だが、途中の転調など、アレンジでこのあたりをうまくカバーしている。
このクリスマスアルバムは1989年のリリースだが、古さを全く感じさせない。
かえってキーボ−ドのＤＸ７のサウンドが「らしく」てよろしい。
ベースは、Abraham Laboriel。
途中の ピアノソロが生ピアノなのがまたいい。肝を知ってるね。
ピアノソロのところで、いきなり4ビートになるのだが、こういうところはホントうまい。
ソロを取るのは Clare Fischer。
バックをこうしたベテランで固めているから、安心してクリスマスのムードを楽しむことができるのだろう。

Celine Dion - Blue
Christmas
いきなりクリスマスの雰囲気が濃厚に漂ってくるイントロだ。
しっとりとした、ミディアムスローのリズムに乗って、丁寧に歌い始めるのは歌姫セリーヌ・ディオン。
音を伸ばすところのノンビブラートとビブラートの使い分け、また高音の地声とウラ声の声の使い方などは、月並みな言い方になってしまうが、ほんとうまい。

生ピアノのバッキングも粋。
途中から厚すぎないストリングスが絡み、間奏へと導いてゆかれるのだが、これがまた心地よい。
バックのコーラスが面白いフレーズを繰り返すのも聴き所だ。
あなたがいないとブルーなクリスマスになりそう・・とブルーという単語がとても効果的に繰り返され、カラフルな色を織り交ぜた歌詞も素晴らしい。
英語の持つシンプルさが、曲ととてもマッチしているうえに、彼女の美しいヴィブラートとあいまって、夢見心地の世界へと導いてくれるから、やがてそういったことさえ忘れてしまう。
08 Chicago - Good Rest Ye Merry
Gentlemen
クリスマスソングを、いきなりこう言う風に演奏されると、言葉を失う。
ファイト！ という気分になる威勢のよさが魅力だ。
出てくる音圧のレベルも高いからね。（笑）
最初は、ちょっとスティング風？だがホーンが入ると、まさにシカゴ！
ハードな肌合いのコーラスがまたいい。
ディストーションのかかったギターソロとホーンの絡みや音色も、彼らの全盛時代を彷彿とさせるようなサウンドだ。
シカゴの文法そのままで、キャリアが持つ魅力と個性がストレートに胸に突き刺さってくるような演奏は、とてもエキサイティング。
普通こういう、いわゆるアクの強いグループは、クリスマスソングでは大体失敗するのだが、このアルバムは例外ともいえる、楽しい仕上がりとなっている。
古さを感じさせないアレンジの工夫が随所にちりばめられているのが、懐かしいサウンドだけれど、いまだに輝きを失っていない理由のひとつかもしれない。

アーロンはフレーズに癖があるから、好き嫌いがあるかもしれないが、こうして一曲だけを聴くと、彼の歌はかなり「柔らかい」ことがわかる。
このあたりが、評価の分かれ目となるかもしれないけど、
合いの手のハモンドだが、まさにハモンドという音で、しかもどこでどうやればいいのかが、わかっって演奏してるね。
途中からオーケストラも加わり、一気に最後まで聞かせてくれる。
彼はネビル・ブラザーズというグループのカナメだが、最後のハモンドソロの終わり方を聞くと、こういうクリスマスアルバムもいいなあと思う。
ちょっとジミー・スミスが入っているかな？（笑）
よく聞くとストリングスも入っているぞ。

Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

のアカペラから始まるこの曲は、何とマイアミの歌姫グロリア・エステファンとの組み合わせだ。
この意表をつくような組み合わせが、この曲を独特なものにしている。
途中で転調し、ストリングスの甘美なる間奏へ。
プロデューサーは
Phil Ramone。
ジャズコーラスのストレートさに、グロリアの少しクセのあるフレーズ回しが絡むというのは、意表を突いた効果だ。
初めて聴いたときは、その新鮮さに驚いたものだ。
途中までは何とバックの演奏なしのアカペラだが、間奏からは厚いオーケストラが入り、リッチで豪華なサウンドに変身する。
ドラムやベースは入らないから、まさに映画音楽のようだ。
グロリアの「ひたむき」な歌い方が、とてもかわいい。
11 Kenny G - Sleigh Ride
このメロディーを、このリズムに乗せるのはとても難しいだろう。
途中から、早い４ビートに乗って展開するソロの疾走感は、聴くものを興奮の坩堝へ誘い込んでゆく。
でもこれだけ、途中からアドリブでメロディーをバラバラにしても、その「かけら」のフレーズのメロディーは信じられないほど、ナチュラルで美しく、元のメロディーへのつなぎも違和感がないのはどうしたことか。
アドリブソロのリズムは少し後ノリで、決してリズムを喰わない。
このことからも、ジャズプレイヤーとしての彼の底知れぬ実力が窺い知れる。
ただ彼のアルバムはどれも、彼のサックスがあまりにも前に出るから、バッキングのサウンドの面白さはない。
だけど、そんなことはどうでも良くなってしまうほど、ケニーのサックスが引っ張るから、まあ問題はないのだけれどね。
サックスプレーヤーも、いろいろな人がクリスマスアルバムを出しているが、この人のが白眉だと思う。
個性が強いので好き嫌いがあるだろうけれど・・
余談だが彼はシアトルの水辺のすばらしい家に住んでいる。

いきなりアカペラから入るのはボン・ジョビ。
そう来るかね。
まさかこうして始まるとは、お釈迦様でもご存じあるまい。
という按配で始まる。

スローな３連の８ビートに乗って、ブルースフレーバー溢れる世界を展開してくれる。
バックのピアノの３連の刻みが、またいい。ハイハットもさりげなく3連を入れてるしね。
この重いノリは、少し古めのロックやブルースが好きな人にはたまらないだろう。
テクはいらないぜ！って感じの、ドラムのシンプルなオカズの盛り上げ方もいいよねえ。
ギターソロは Don
Felder。
ここでもバックに流れるハモンドのサウンドは欠かせないものになっている。
あっという間に終わってしまい、もうちょっと長くてもいいのに・・などと贅沢なことをいいたくなる。

シンセのウィンドストリングスのサウンドに乗り、ソウルフルにグイグイ引っ張るのはルーサー・ヴァンドロス。
スローなリズムに乗って・・でもほんといい声だなあ・・ファルセットと地声のコンビネーションがセクシーだ。
アメリカの一流歌手は、うまいのは当り前で、その上に声が個性的。
聞いた瞬間に誰かわかるくらいの個性が声そのものにないと、一流として生き残れないという厳しい世界だ。
バックのピアノもツボを押さえたフレーズで、間奏のサックスソロは、ベテランの、Gerald
Albright。
安心して酔いしれることができる。

黒っぽいファンキーさを醸し出しながら、それでいて全体的にしっとりとしたクリスマスの味もちゃんと出ている
んだなあこれが。
叫ぶところはブルーノートのフレーズだったりしてカッコ良すぎるぜ！
ストリングスなど、随所のアレンジも秀逸。
ポロポロ入るピアノもいいし、途中でなんだか不思議な転調もあるので、アレンジは、一体誰だろうとクレジットを見ると、どれどれ。
クインシー・ジョーンズ。
失礼しました。
所々に入るシンセの音もほんといい。
14 Natalie Cole - The Christmas Song
ちょっとムーディーブルース風の、オーケストラサウンドから始まるがそれもそのはず、オーケストラはムーディーブルースの名曲「サテンの夜」と同じ、ロンドンフィルハーモニックオーケストラ
。
ナタリーのストレートな表現力に加え、途中で亡き父のナット・キング・コールのデュエットが加わるという見せ場（聴かせ場？）がある。
これは、父親の昔のテイクをもとにキーや、デュエットのタイミングを合わせたりしなければならないし、男女のキーの違いを考えたアレンジも必要だから、録音はかなり大変だったはず。
父親とのデュエットを聴いても、偉大な父に引けを取らない、柔らかいタッチの声がとても魅力的。
ナタリー！お父さんも天国で喜んでるよ！と言いたくなるね。
転調も忙しいのだが、気にならないアレンジはさすが。
かなり編成の大きなオーケストラだが、うるさくならずに仕立て上げられている。

High
イントロのピアノから「しっとり」始まる。
聞き惚れていたら、ドラムのオカズが左右に振られて、いきなり斬り込んでくるから要注意だ。
アップテンポに乗ったWill
Leeの切れのいいベースに乗って、バネッサが生き生きと歌い上げ、エフェクトのかかったギターがこういうサウンドでバックでもって絡まれちゃあ、たまらんわなあ。
途中でスキャットと合わせたギターソロが登場するが、この部分のコーラスとしてのバッキングアレンジも新鮮。
途中で聴いたことのあるフレーズも登場。
こういうレベルのアレンジは創造力がなければ不可能だ。
ドラムのスネアがカンカンという高めのチューニングも利いている。
日本人の演奏では残念ながらこういうノリは聴けない。

生ギターの伴奏でベビー・フェイスの特徴のある歌声が、脳裏に焼き付くように、染み込んでくるといえばいいだろうか・・とにかく彼のノドが非常に柔らかいことが、その歌の肌触りから感じとることができ
る。
この人は黒人なのに、さらっとした肌合いの歌声で、とても知的な感触だ。
途中の転調でいきなり、リズムセクションが入ってくるが、この転調はないよなあ・・
その後もめまぐるしい転調で、聞く人を幻惑する。
眩暈がするような、その転調に翻弄されていると、女性的とさえいってもいい、ファルセットボイスの繊細な感触とあいまって、彼の歌が独特なものに仕立て上げられているから、クリスマスソングだということを忘れそうになる。

間奏も琴サウンド！
だが妙な異国情緒風にならずに、クリスマスの雰囲気をとてもよく出している。
歌もちょっと投げやり風なんだけれど、ストレートというか全体のバランスが絶妙で、日本人だとか何人だとかとか、そういうことを考えさせないサウンドは見事。
よく聴くと琴の音が結構入っているのだが、シンセとうまく溶け合って、あまり気にならない。
こういう手があるんだなあ。
この歌手、ほとんどの日本人は知らないだろう。
