クリスマスセールが始まった。早速こんな記事が出ている。

Things got out of hand at a Wal-Mart store in Orlando, Fla., where a man who allegedly cut in line to get a discounted laptop computer was wrestled to the ground, according to a video shown by an ABC affiliate, WFTV-TV.

フロリダ州オーランドにあるウォルマートでの話だ。安売りされているラップトップ型のコンピュータを買おうとして列に割り込んだ男性が、他の客たちによって床に組み伏せられた。皆さんだいぶ殺気立っているようだ。

ビリー牧師、と教会員から呼ばれるビル・タレン氏は、クリスマスセールが開始される金曜を目前に、アメリカの消費者主義を批判した。

"Americans are instructed that our way of life is shopping. That our democracy is shopping. Citizenship is shopping. We don't need towns and cities anymore because we have a shopping experience．"

アメリカ人はショッピングが、私たちの生活様式だと教え込まれている。アメリカの民主主義はショッピングであり、アメリカの市民権もショッピングだ。我々に町や市は要らない。なぜならショッピングがあるからだ。

いよいよ感謝祭が押し迫った。目的地は故郷に住む両親、空港や高速道路は大混雑になる。まるで、お盆休みの帰省ラッシュのようだ。トリプルＡ社から、こんな統計が出ている。

The AAA survey estimates that 37.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday. That's up slightly from 37 million travelers a year ago. About 83 percent of those making those trips will do so by car, about the same percent as a year ago.

この感謝祭の休日、約３７３０万のアメリカ人が５０マイル（８０キロ）以上の旅行をすることが推定される。これは去年の数字、３７００万人を少し上回る。旅行者の８３％は車を使い、このパーセンテージは去年と同程度だ。

ＧＭの３万人解雇発表について自動車労働者組合はこう語っている。

"Monday's action by General Motors is not only extremely disappointing, unfair and unfortunate, it is devastating to many thousands of workers, their families and their communities," according to the union.

従業員とその家族、それに地域社会に大きな打撃を与える解雇に対して、組合側は単に失望しただけでなく、ＧＭの措置を不公平であり残念なものである、と非難している。

トヨタの売上がフォードを抜いた。

市場シェア率で見ると、ゼネラルモータースが１８．８％で一位、トヨタが１７．９％で二位、そして三位が１５．３％のフォードだ。倒産が噂されるＧＭだけに、トヨタが米国市場でナンバー１に輝く日が来るかもしれない。

最大のオートメーカー、ゼネラル・モータース倒産の可能性が話題になっている。これでは従業員の士気が下がってしまう。そこで、リック・ワゴナー氏（最高経営責任者）は、次のような言葉を社内用のホームページを使って発表した。

"I'd like to just set the record straight here and now: There is absolutely no plan, strategy or intention for GM to file for bankruptcy," Wagoner wrote in a column posted on an internal employee website.

この場で事実を明確にしておきたい。我が社には、倒産の計画など決して無い。

ホールフーズマーケットは、現状が２００６年の６月１５日までに改善されなければ、ロブスター（伊勢エビ）の販売を中止すると発表した。

The company set a deadline of June 15, 2006, to assess and upgrade the way it buys and sells the creatures in a more humane way.

太字の部分が注目だ。more humane wayとあるが、humaneには人道的とか慈悲深い、という意味がある。humane societyなら、動物愛護協会だ。ようするに、ホールフーズマーケットは、現在ロブスターが売買されている環境の残酷さを指摘しているわけだ。

何が残酷なのか？

Whole Foods said it wants to find ways to avoid the long-term storage many lobsters face after capture.

実際にロブスターが捕獲されてから売りに出されるまでの保管時間が長すぎるようだ。
