彼女の声帯は、普通のボリュームからシャウトに至るまで、とても広いダイナミックレンジを持っている。
これくらいの歌唱力がある歌手は、節回しがマライアやホイットニーなどと似る傾向にあるようだ。
誰もが知っているこの曲を、彼女はしっとりと、そして徐々にダイナミックに彼女の世界へ誘い、そして聴かせてくれる。

デュエットで絡むのは、声ですぐにわかるボビー・コードウェル。
控え目な管のバッキングも、パーカッションも、上質なスパイスのように効いている。
間奏はハモンドだが、抑え目のフレーズで、しかも要所でレズリーを回すというなかなか渋いこともやっている。
ミディアムテンポだが、バックのギターをよく聴くと、なかなかの職人芸だ。

のハモリで、ボビー・コードウェルのメロディーラインが降りてゆくのが、たまらなくお洒落だ。

最後の方で音楽をバックに、二人が話すのだが・・この続きがまたいい。

03 Baby Face - Rudolph The Nosed Reindeer
プロデューサーとしてもかなりの力量を持つベビーフェイス。
この曲は日本ではたしか「赤鼻のトナカイ」とかいう邦題になるが、当然コード進行などは、かなり渋いことをやっている。
アレンジを勉強する人にはとてもいい教材になるだろう。
ドラムのスネアのタイトさとコーラスのやわらかさの対比というかバランスがとてもお洒落だ。
途中のブレイクのエレピのサウンドもナイス。
ドラムもリムショットを使い分けたりと、こういうアレンジのセンスが、「黒人らしくない」ベビーフェイスのよさだろう。
バッキングにはハモンドのサウンドを使っている。
ベビーフェイスのフレーズの「崩し方」を聞くと、只者ではないことがわかるはず。
だんだん盛り上がる「おかず」の入れ方や最後のサックスの絡みも、聞き所だ。

04 Larry Carlton - The Christmas Song
いわゆるエレキ・ギターの演奏。
Four
Play への参加で最近ますますよく耳にするラリー・カールトン。
メロディーラインを丁寧に演奏している。
もちろん、端々にはラリー節が散りばめられている。
ギターだけの演奏なのでちょっと地味だが、途中の転調など、アレンジでこのあたりをうまくカバーしている。
このクリスマスアルバムは1989年のリリースだが、古さを全く感じさせない。
かえってキーボ−ドのＤＸ７のサウンドが「らしく」てよろしい。
ベースは、Abraham Laboriel。
途中の 生ピアノソロは、Clare Fischer。
バックをこうしたベテランで固めているから、安心してクリスマスのムードを楽しむことができるのだろう。

Christmas
いきなりクリスマスの雰囲気が濃厚に漂ってくるイントロだ。
しっとりとした、ミディアムスローのリズムに乗って、丁寧に歌い始めるのは歌姫セリーヌ・ディオン。
音を伸ばすところのノンビブラートとビブラートの使い分け、また高音の地声とウラ声の声の使い方などは、月並みな言い方になってしまうが、ほんとうまい。

生ピアノのバッキングも粋。
途中から厚すぎないストリングスが絡み、間奏へと導いてゆくのが、心地よい。
バックのコーラスが面白いフレーズを繰り返すのも、聴き所だ。
彼女の美しいヴィブラートとあいまって、夢見心地の世界へと導いてくれるから、やがてそういったことさえ忘れてしまう。

幻想的なイントロにラテンのフレーズが流れる。
そして一転。
聞こえてくるのは、あのクリスマスサウンド。
ここでは生ギターを使っていい味を出している。
ポップな味付けだが、それがサンタナかな。
盛り上がり方も、一昔前の懐かしい「熱さ」が感じられる。

Let It Snow
ミディアムアップテンポの４ビートにのり、ハモンドソロから始まり、アーロン独特の歌声から始まるこの曲もクリスマスには欠かせない曲
だ。
ベースのランニングと、ハモンドのバッキングによるジャズフレーバーたっぷりの濃いサックスソロは、Plas
Johnson。

合いの手のハモンドだが、どこでどうやればいいのかがわかった演奏だな。
途中からオーケストラも加わり、一気に最後まで聞かせてくれる。
彼はネビル・ブラザーズというグループのカナメだが、最後のハモンドソロの終わり方を聞くと、こういうクリスマスアルバムもいいなあと思う。
よく聞くとストリングスも入っているぞ。

Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

のアカペラから始まるこの曲は、何とマイアミの歌姫グロリア・エステファンとの組み合わせだ。
この意表をつくような組み合わせが、この曲を独特なものにしている。
途中で転調してストリングスの間奏へ。
プロデューサーは
Phil Ramone。
なるほど・・
コーラスのストレートさに、グロリアの少しクセのあるフレーズ回しが絡むというのは、意表を突いた効果といえるだろう。
初めて聴いたときは、その新鮮さに驚いたものだ。
途中までは何とバックの演奏なしのアカペラだが、間奏からは厚いオーケストラが入り、リッチで豪華なサウンドに変身する。
まさに映画音楽のようだ。
グロリアの「ひたむき」な歌い方がとてもかわいい。
09 Kenny G - Sleigh Ride
このメロディーを、このリズムに乗せるのはとても難しいだろう。
途中から、早い４ビートに乗って展開するソロの疾走感は、聴くものを興奮の坩堝へ誘い込んでゆく。
でもこれだけ、途中からアドリブでメロディーをバラバラにしても、その「かけら」のフレーズのメロディーは信じられないほど、ナチュラルで美しく、元のメロディーへのつなぎも違和感がない
のはどうしたことか。
アドリブソロのリズムは少し後ノリで、決してリズムを喰わない。
このことからも、ジャズプレイヤーとしての彼の底知れぬ実力が窺い知れる。
サックスプレーヤーも、いろいろな人がクリスマスアルバムを出しているが、この人のが白眉だと思う。
個性が強いので好き嫌いはあるだろうけれど・・。
余談だが彼はシアトルの水辺のすばらしい家に住んでいる。

いきなりアカペラから入るのはボン・ジョビ。
そう来るかね。
まさかここで登場するとは、お釈迦様でもご存じあるまい。

スローな３連の８ビートに乗って、ブルースフレーバー溢れる世界を展開してくれる。
バックのピアノの３連の刻みが、またいい。
この重いノリは、少し古めのロックやブルースが好きな人にはたまらないはずだ。
ドラムのシンプルなオカズでの盛り上げ方もね。
ギターソロは Don
Felder。
ここでもバックに流れるハモンドのサウンドは欠かせないものになっている。
あっという間に終わってしまい、もうちょっと長くてもいいのに・・などと贅沢なことをいいたくなる。

シンセのウィンドストリングスのサウンドに乗り、ソウルフルにグイグイ引っ張るのはルーサー・ヴァンドロス。
スローなリズムに乗って・・でもほんといい声だなあ・・ファルセットと地声のコンビネーションがセクシーだ。
アメリカの一流歌手は、うまいのは当り前で、その上に声が個性的。
聞いた瞬間に誰かわかるくらいの個性が声そのものにないと、一流として生き残れないという厳しい世界だ。
バックのピアノもツボを押さえたフレーズで、間奏のサックスソロは、ベテランの、Gerald
Albright。
安心して酔いしれることができる。

黒っぽいファンキーさを出しながら、それでいて全体的にしっとりとしたクリスマスの味を出している。
ストリングスなど、随所のアレンジも秀逸。
アレンジは、一体誰だろうとクレジットを見ると、どれどれ。
クインシー・ジョーンズ。
失礼しました。
所々に入るシンセの音もほんといい。
12 Amy Grant - Have Yourself a Merry
Christmas
エイミー・グラントは、その素朴で飾らない表現が魅力だ。
彼女はカントリー畑出身だが、この曲を聴いている限り、そういう匂いは全くない。
Amy はとても丁寧に唄う。
だから歌そのものに、そうした種類の持つある種の説得力を与えている。
それでいて、さらっとした風合いで歌うのだけれど、長いキャリアと実力に裏打ちされているため、ダシがまたよく効いている。
このあたりが、カントリー畑のファンだけではなく、誰からも好かれる理由なのだろう。
アタマから響くオーケストラのサウンドがまた甘美で、ラストは、アメリカの田舎の郊外の牧場に広がる澄み切った星空を想像するようなサウンドだ。
そして寒さで瞬く星空のように、余韻を残しながらで消えて行く・・

Fourplay
- Snowbound
職人ドナルド・フェイゲンの名曲を、インスツルメントの職人たちが、素晴らしいサウンドに料理してくれている。
イントロを聞くと、ドナルド・フェイゲン独特のサウンドとフレーズだ。
途中の管楽器の使い方がドナルドフェイゲン独特だが、これを妙に変えたりせず、上手に生かしたアレンジがまた見事。
ラリーのギターもいい味を出している。
リー・リトナーもよかったけれど、ラリーのブルーノートの混ぜ方が絶妙。
それも、ディレイをかけた、少し歪ませたノートでね。
生ピアノではなく、わざわざと、いかにもエレピらしい音色で絡みつき、彼ならではのサウンドとフレーズを聞かせているのはボブ・ジェームス。
ハービーのドラムのスネアの音とタイミングが、実にいい。
ノリはもちろんのこと「タメる間合い」も絶妙。
スネアにかけてあるディレイが音に空間を作るなどの、凝った仕掛けが宝石のように散りばめられている。
バックのホーンセクションのカウンターフレーズも粋だ。
彼ら4人は楽器でしか表現できない、そして歌では表現できない独自の世界を創り上げた。
音自体がとてもシンプルなのは、サウンドのない「間」をうまく生かしているからだろう。
彼らは「間」を聴かせることのできる、数少ない楽器弾きなのだと思う。
14 Yutaka Yokokura - This Christmas
このアーティストは日本人。
デイブ・グルーシンのＧＲＰレーベルからリリースされている。
琴の音を生かしたすばらしいアレンジだ。
間奏も琴！ だが素晴らしいのは、妙な異国情緒風にならずに、クリスマスの雰囲気をとてもよく出しているという点だ。
歌もちょっと投げやり風なんだけれど、ストレートというかバランスが絶妙で、日本人だとか何人だとかとか、そういうことを考えさせないサウンドは見事。
よく聴くと琴の音が結構入っているのだが、シンセとうまく溶け合って、あまり気にならない。
こういう手があるんだなあ。
この歌手、ほとんどの日本人は知らないだろう。
Very Special Christmas for Me... Will be
と繰り返しながらフェードアウト。
15 Natalie Cole - The Christmas Song
ちょっとムーディーブルース風の、オーケストラサウンドから始まるがそれもそのはず、オーケストラはムーディーブルースの名曲「サテンの夜」と同じ、ロンドンフィルハーモニックオーケストラ
。
ナタリーのストレートな表現力に加え、途中で亡き父のナット・キング・コールのデュエットが加わるという見せ場（聴かせ場？）がある。
これは、父親の昔のテイクをもとにキーや、デュエットのタイミングを合わせたりしなければならないし、男女のキーの違いを考えたアレンジも必要だすから、この録音はかなり大変だったはず。
転調も忙しいのだが、気にならないアレンジはさすが。
かなり編成の大きなオーケストラだが、うるさくならずに仕立て上げられている。

イントロのピアノから「しっとり」始まる。
聞き惚れていたら、ドラムのオカズが左右に振られて、いきなり斬り込んでくるから要注意だ。
アップテンポに乗ったWill
Leeの切れのいいベースに乗って、バネッサが生き生きと歌い上げ、エフェクトのかかったギターもバックで絡まれちゃあ、たまらんわなあ。
途中でスキャットと合わせたギターソロが登場するが、この部分のコーラスとしてのバッキングアレンジも新鮮。
途中で聴いたことのあるフレーズも登場。
こういうレベルのアレンジは創造力が必要だ。
ドラムのスネアがカンカンという高めのチューニングも利いている。
日本人の演奏では残念ながらこういうノリは聴けない。

生ギターの伴奏でベビー・フェイスの特徴のある歌声が、脳裏に焼き付くように、染み込んでくるといえばいいだろうか・・とにかく彼のノドが非常に柔らかいことが、その歌の肌触りから感じとることができ
る。
この人は黒人なのに、さらっとした肌合いの歌声で、とても知的な感触だ。
途中の転調でいきなり、リズムセクションが入ってくるが、この転調はないよなあ・・
その後もめまぐるしい転調で、聞く人を幻惑する。
眩暈がするような、その転調に翻弄されていると、女性的とさえいってもいい、ファルセットボイスの繊細な感触とあいまって、彼の歌が独特なものに仕立て上げられているから、クリスマスソングだということを忘れそうになる。

シャッフル気味のアップテンポになってからも、厚いコーラスに支えられて、セリーヌはノリのいいフレージングで、どんどん持っていってくれる。
途中の絶叫の後に、やさしくささやくようなフレーズを持ってきたりと、まさに変幻自在。
ノリに乗っている彼女の姿が目に浮かぶようだ。
